She grew up in beijing during the time of mao zedong. After graduating high school she went to the countryside to work with peasant workers and eventually her fellow workers became the subject of many of her photographs and drawings. 25 40 black madonna is part of hung liu s continuing dialogue between past and present. Liu s works are most often based on 19th and 20th century photographs taken in china by commercial photographers or foreign tourists.

Bio hung liu was born in changchun china in 1948 growing up under the maoist regime. In 1975 she attended beijing teachers college in beijing and after that she studied mural painting at the central academy of fine arts beijing. Initially trained in the socialist realist style liu studied mural painting as a graduate student at the central academy of fine art in beijing before immigrating to the us in 1984 to attend the university of california san diego where she studied under allan kaprow the american originator of happenings. I have been painting in america since 1984. Hung liu chinese b 1948 is a renowned painter born in changchun china. It remains the most extensive exhibit of her work to date with paintings from more than 40 collections displayed. Bringing a deeply felt sense of the past to her paintings prints and installations hung liu combines ancient and modern motifs from chinese history to demonstrate her experience of history every day as an active affecting presence.

When she returned to school she majored in mural painting and starred in her own television show titled how to draw and paint liu. The art of hung liu was a retrospective collection of liu s work including around 80 paintings and an assortment of photographs studies and sketchbooks.
