Use your digital multimeter dmm to ensure all power to the circuit is off.
How to check a start capacitor with a multimeter.
In case of a polarized capacitor connect the red probe with the positive terminal of the capacitor generally the longer lead and the black probe to the negative terminal.
If the capacitor is used in an ac circuit set the multimeter to measure ac voltage.
You will be taking a measurement reading of the electrical resistance.
Connect the meter leads to the capacitor terminals.
If you suspect the capacitor is dead conducting an ohm meter test is the easiest way to find out.
This one covers testing of the start capacitor.
Take your multimeter and set it to capacitance.
Once both probes come into contact with the terminals on your capacitor the readout on your multimeter will start to change.
How to test an appliance capacitor with a multimeter to test a capacitor to see if it is working you will first need an ohmmeter multimeter.
Connect the multimeter probes to the terminals of the capacitor.
Plug the positive and negative gator probes in your multimeter and check the reading.
If your capacitor is in working order the reading should start rising and after it reaches a certain point it should start falling because the capacitor has begun to absorb the energy from the multimeter.
To test a capacitor by dmm digital multimeter follow the steps given below.
Place the red probe on the positive terminal and the black probe on the negative.
Use your multimeter to confirm the capacitor is fully discharged.
In case of non polarized capacitor connect it either way as they do not have polarity.
This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites.
If is used in a dc circuit set the dmm to measure dc voltage.
Disconnect and discharge the capacitor to check a capacitor with an ohm meter you must do two things.
The reading on your multimeter will tell you if the capacitor is working properlyor needs to be replaced.
Set the meter on ohm range set it at lease 1000ohm 1k.
